Hedgey things

Can't think of anything deep, so I'll just write what I'm thinking about -

A nursery near me is closing, one of those cases where the owners were getting near retirement anyway and then a huge mall was built right across from them making their property worth a gagillion dollars... sigh. I'll really miss it, I especially loved going into their giant greenhouse with the misters and all the tropical plants...funky little fountains and birdbaths...

People are descending upon it like locusts, everything down to the little bricks and boards the plants sat on is for sale. One good thing from it is that I managed to bring home 2 nandinas ('heavenly bamboo' that isn't a bamboo), a pyracanthus, a red-twig dogwood, 2 blue butterfly bushes and a beautiful little japanese snowbell. I have such a huge area I want hedging and shrubs for and I really hate arborvitae.

So - lots of digging to do (the icky part) but I'm started on my way to having the little side gate 'hedged' and have a companion dogwood for the other side too! (((cuddles large pots with plants in them)))

I also have a scad of bluebell bulbs that I don't know what to do with - dig a trench and dump them in, I guess. They've naturalized all over my yard and everywhere I dig I dig them up.

How's your yard doing? Anything new?

Hey, ((((Prim)))). I wish I could grow bluebells and peonies. It is too hot here, though, and we have been having SUCH a drought. I shudder to think what the water (much less the electric) is going to be. The bottom five pictures (http://pics.livejournal.com/maidoforange/gallery/0000erf4) are from June 3. I have cannas and roses, mainly. I still have a few pertunia clinging on, a few zinnas, and some daisies.

I'd heard it was dry there - I hope you get the rain you need soon! Your yard look beautiful, drought or no drought, and the trees make such a lovely backdrop for it too. :-)

Oh! Many happy plants for you! I hope you will show us photos when they have settled into their new homes.

[identity profile] primsong.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so too! I was out taking pictures of my sweetpeas this morning, and watering some new hostas I put in - one has creamy stripes and the other has silver spots on it, they're so cute. There's something theraputic about taking pictures of flowers.

The scruffy plant on my verandah/balcony is hanging in there! :-D I've been considering getting some other things to set out there, though, in an attempt to make it look a bit more gardeny -- even though we are on the 2nd floor!

More! More plants! And some planters that mount on the railing, and a strawberry pot and a little topiary and some herbs! A fat pot of pansies and snapdragons! Summer bulbs!

*Youuu will buuuuuy plaaaants...."

I just showed Bob your post....he's envious of your two butterfly bushes :) He just posted some pics and the link to our garden website on [livejournal.com profile] my_green_thumbs :) Could you add him to your flist? I know he'd love to see your gardening posts. He can add you to his too if you'd like...however, he posts a lot of politics and his thoughts may not always agree with yours...so let him or me know if you'd like him to add you :)

[identity profile] primsong.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've added him tenatively ;-) I don't mind a little ranting on politics if the language isn't too foul, but let him know not to take offense if it seems a bit much and I take it back off will you? As you said, we're quite different in that area! He'll have to add me too if he wants to see my posts, of course. The two butterfly bushes are "adonis blue" and have lovely slender silvery leaves.

I've checked the 'green thumbs' listing, but as I'm already active at another online gardening group (GardenStew) I probaby can't take the time to be at yet another. Thank you for letting me know about it. :-) Your pictures are very nice!

Okay Prim...we used to be where you are politically...we voted for Bush in 2000...Bob started having a change of heart about three years ago now (just about the time the war started) and I followed about a year or so later...

And yes, I'll have him add you... :)

[identity profile] iorhael94.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
oh duh I see I had this backwards....yes I'll add you to his right now :) And on his....you don't have to worry about foul language with Bob! His posts are very eloquent and thoughtful :)

I have weeds...but they are very prettyweeds....

Actually going plant shopping with my Mom today to help her pick out and lug stuff- that plus lunch sounds like a good afternoon to me =D

[identity profile] primsong.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I *love* plant shopping - everything smells so nice and I always want to take it all home with me, or maybe get a job at a nursery just so I can be surrounded by them all day. Enjoy! It sounds very pleasant. :-)
