Swinging along, condo style...

Egads - it's been five bloomin' weeks since I've updated this... Lots happening, so I thought I'd drop in an entry. Two major things happened, My 'sort of grandpa' (they've been together for 30 years but never married) is there with her in a little apartment thing, so here's hoping for the best. She finally stopped whipping off her clothing at the least provocation (wild times!) and now mostly drives him crazy popping her teeth in and out, lol... She's a wild-woman with her walker.

We're still slowly working on cleaning and packing things at her house, we'll probably have to sell it after a bit. Hard to lose the 'grandma house' that we all remember since kids, etc. - my grandfather built part of it too. Ah well - at least she's relatively happy, she *loves* it that she doesn't have to cook anymore. Down side is my mom is having a hard time adjusting to the shifting of the generations and keeps checking on me and my brother as if she's afraid we'll suddenly drop dead. :-P

The other major thing was we just bought a condo:
We have a friend of the family who ended up with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome about six years ago (trust me folks, you *don't* want this) - after completely exhausting her resources and still not being taken seriously by any doctor so she couldn't get any government help, we've taken on making sure she has a roof over her head, help getting food from the food-ministry here, etc.

Recently we had two shifts in this scenario:

A) we FINALLY have found a doc and a clinic at OHSU that are willing to diagnose her as having CFS, so we can pursue some kind of disability status for her (at this point they won't even give her food-stamps, dangit) - this is a major breakthrough for us, even if it's a long road ahead before we can get benefits going. Her only income now is occasionally managing to sell some of her 3-D artwork stuff online.

B) her rent went up twice *plus* they split off the water/sewer bill to no longer be in the rent - all over about four months! This amounted to a massive hike in her rent and we had to bow out of keeping her where she's been all these years. SO... we took a leap and bought a condo! It's a lovely little thing, 2-bedroom so we can hopefully have a paying roomie. Believe it or not, we actually come out *ahead* on this, it's cheaper to buy this place then to keep paying rent - AND we can sell it someday and recoup at least part of it all. Hoorah! I haven't told her yet, it's a surprise for Thursday.
:-)

That's all for now - which is plenty, I think. Hope everyone else is having a more 'normal' January-Feb.

Oh, I am glad your grandmother is settling in, ((((Prim)))). Hopefully your mom will come to accept the generation shift.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. I hope that she can get the help she needs and you are amazing for helping her like you do but I knew that about you already. :?) Congrats on the condo. It sounds like a good solution.

I remember you were worrying about this friend before, I'm glad it's working out for her and for you. Sometimes buying a place really is a better way to go, that's what we discovered!

As for normal, our Jan/Feb here in Wisconsin are so normal (the way they used to be with tons of snow every other day, alternating with frigid temps) we can hardly stand it. ;-) Makes me long for a duststorm!

I hated letting go of my grandparent's home, but as long as she's comfortable and satisfied with the situation I am sure you are greatly comforted.

I recall you mentioning your friend before. CFS is so stigmatized in the established medical profession. I am glad you finally found a doctor for her. The condo sounds lovely! I am sure she will be very pleased with the surprise and it is a better financial investment for you than rent.

You do have a lot going on! *hugs!*
