Early spring trimming time

I can't believe how beautiful it is outside, we're getting an early spring for certain here. The morning fog lifted to a scintillating blue and I was out with my little ladder and clippers clipping away. Trimming grapes is very therapeutic, nipping away the deadwood and bringing order to a tangled brown net of vines.

Gave the two shocked-mohawk looking plum trees a nice haircut and then cut back six leggy butterfly bushes as well. I love how springtime is so full of song - the robins and chickadees were singing and peeping in the cypress nearby, everytime I kneel down I can hear the delicate sound of rainwater percolating in the mulch.

Found holes where a new family of ground-squirrels have moved in beneath a fir...did a little raking and planted a row of gladiolus bulbs along a fence to go with the crocosmia in the summer, purple to mix with the orange, should be pretty.

The crocuses and candytuft are blooming already, forsythia is budding and daffys are coming up thick and fast - and it's barely February! The ground is soft with the rains and everything is washed fresh and ready. It's so lovely, I just wish I could somehow share it with you.

I can just *see* all the color in your post :) Sounds beautiful. I guess Punxsutawney Phil was wrong :)

Pshaw, groundhogs are for the East! I'm sure the Northwestern Nutria's shadow must have said something different.

Well, well you are right...and so was Phil for the East Coast....

Crocuses and daffodils already... wow. We're supposed to get more snow here tonight!

(I'm jealous - I won't have any crocuses, daffodils or forsythia this year, since we sold the old house and I've never planted any bulbs here.)

I know! I've seen the pictures of the snow in other parts of the country and am amazed at the contrast. And no flowers?? By all means, do pick up a sack of bulbs and get to work! ;-)

All we've been getting here in California is rain. You're welcome to borrow our weather, but can you please give it back to us now?

Ah, so that's where it came from - I thought that bright yellow ball in the sky looked familiar, I must have seen it when I was in CA. :-D

Life is good in Northwesterness

Amen! How is your yard doing? Did that development across the way block as much light as you feared it would?

The Cliff Dwellers do block the late afternoon sun but it has not, as yet, made any apparent concerns to the flora.
I see everything popping up but what excites me every year is the Daphne Adora bushes which scent my front and back yard wonderfully.
I look forward to a host of Tulips this year that Tine' planted last fall.

oh
and save me one of those loaves of zucc bread or whatever it is you are looking to bake. I dare ask and would stop by for a tea any weekend...bold as Gimli I know.

You have such a lovely eye for nature, it's a pleasure to read your observations. :-)

I was thinking, "Sounds like spring" this morning, when I went out to get newspapers and heard an outburst of birdsong. I was also visited by a crow, which walked along the deck railing to the correct window and stared directly in at me. (It amuses me greatly when they do that.)

Crows are so intelligent, I love watching them - and they apparently enjoy watching back! and yes, there is that almost indefinable "spring" sound and feel hovering on the edges of late, fat robins have shown up hopping about the fence-tops to contribute to the songs already.

No spring here, but yours sounds lovely! Cold and cloudy here , when it's not raining. It did warm up a bit on Sunday, but I was in and out of the condo all day, and found it not conducive to long shirt sleeves, so slung on my cape/poncho and planted a fedora on my head each time I went out. My friend compared the cape/poncho to a snuggie. I had to laugh. :) I treasure it dearly, as it was one of the last things my mother bought me.

Capes are good. Capes and fedoras are even better.

(Heh, now I need an icon of that shot from Spearhead from Space... *g*)
