Speaking of Ruffles

I love ruffles and was tremendously pleased to see them coming back into fashion this year - a chance to find a couple nice pieces to add to my wardrobe that were (gasp) new!

Sadly, it appears so many years have passed since the last time ruffles made an appearance the tailors have forgotten how to properly use them.

I mean, seriously, people - rows of short ruffles going around a shirt, like fat stripes? Wads of ruffles on shoulders? Strings of ruffle sewn around the neck and then, as if they didn't know how to stop, on across the chest, just wandering off down the torso? Teensy ruffles that end up just looking like someone accidentally stuck them in the dryer on high... plaid ruffles with no attention paid to the pattern in the fabric... oh gack. Ruffles on the hips??

Where o where are the thick, properly ruffly ruffles nicely layered and appropriately placed for fluffy texturing and quasi-historic cheery poof?

Sir Percy would be appalled.

I remember the clothes I wore back in the 80's....I forgot what they were called...ruffled blouses and skirts in sort of a cow girl style. This gal I worked with was a country singer by night so I kind of modeled her. I can remember the exact skirts and blouses I had cause I wore them a lot ;)

I had some of those too - Gunne Sax and similar, kind of prairie-meets-country-meets-Victorian. I thought it looked pretty good on most girls, unlike some of the other stuff that's gone by (like my red, white and blue bell-bottoms in 1976, lol!).

ahhh...the prairie look...that's what they were called...I couldn't remember...I loved the Gunne Sax but they were very expensive...

Ruffles might be making a comeback...did you see the dress Zoe Saldana (from Avatar and Star Trek) was wearing at the Oscars last night? The bottom part was layers of gorgeous purple ruffles...so elegant that I thought they were feathers until I read this morning that they were actually ruffles. I'll see if I can find a pic to send you.

They are! :-) (yay)
I love the purple ruffled dress, that's serious ruffling, almost more like a giant pom-pom. Very pretty!
