In which Sony reeks

So...I sell stuff online on Etsy, which means I need a reasonably good digital camera on tap. My old Canon has been plugging along for eons, still working well but as it had lost its little protective door over the lens years back and all the little labels were wearing off, my DH gifted me with a new Sony one for Christmas. Yay, says I - it's nice and light and cute!

Fast forward 5 months. The flash suddenly stops working and an error message shows up. No probs, we think, it's still under warranty, right? Send it to Sony and they claim it has corrosion and obviously gotten water on it, so they won't replace it. Pardon me, but I DO know enough to not take it out in the rain, into the bathtub, etc. and the darn thing is practically new. DH protested to them and pointed this out, as well as pointing them to the numerous instances we have since found online of Sony's stuff corroding way too easily entirely on its own.

Nope, they say, nothin' doin'. But they'll generously "fix it" for MORE than a new one would cost. Sigh. More protesting.

They then offered to replace it with another model for "only $79"... we look up that model and it not only doesn't have half the features of our current one, it's being discontinued and sells new for about $89 in stores. Yeah...riiight...dump your junk on me, will you?

We finally just asked for our camera back - it arrived today without the nifty cover we had sent it in, but otherwise in the same state it was when it left. And still with no flash. Sheesh.

Meanwhile, my old Canon Powershot is still plugging along, a faithful workhorse that takes better pics than the Sony did anyway. Canon rocks!

Moral of story that I want all you to know - Do NOT buy anything Sony...they used to be good but now they use made in China garbage and the innards corrode and their customer service is (unmentionable descriptive). Warning given!

That makes me sad. I used to like Sony products. I had a similar experience with an Acer netbook with an intermittently faulty wifi card, sent it off to be fixed and all they did was wipe the hard drive and send it back. The wifi is still borked (sometimes it just stops recognizing the hardware and I have to shut it off and reboot it to get it to work again. Not restart, actually *shut it off* yeesh...)

I still seem to have good luck with Samsung for things like TVs, cellphones and cameras at least (well at the moment, anyway). I don't think there's anyone out there who understands the concept of customer service anymore, they figure you are replaceable so why should they bother...

Sorry to hear this!
Yes, I was most upset when I ordered my latest Sony camera only to find it was manufactured in PRC. I only bought it because it used to be manufactured in Japan! Panasonic is starting to go that way too, but lots of their stuff is still made in Japan. If you go into the store to look at the cameras, you should be able to see if the model is Japanese or Chinese in origin. Panasonic cameras are awesome.
