P.D.Q.

I don't know what it was that got me thinking about it again, but yesterday P.D.Q. Bach came to mind. I used to have some of his "A Little Nightmare Music" and others on a scratchy tape in college and adored it. Wandered over to Amazon to see what he was up to and stumbled into a treasure trove of PDQ-ness - I wanted them ALL... Ended up ordering the big collected set as my birthday/Christmas present to myself, and used my daughter's gift certificate for Amazon to pay for part of it as she wants to hear it too and says it can be 'from her to me' that way to help us both rationalize it. We were singing a couple of the 'ground rounds' together as we typed it all in. "Jaaaaane...my Jane....you are my queeeeen...." *snicker*

I love classical music, but not in the intense scholarly way - I can only make wild guesses at the names of composers and pieces when I hear them - but that quirk in my humor makes me gravitate to Prof. Schikele and his great parodies. Probably the same quirk that makes me love Weird Al and Dr. Demento. Can't wait for it to get here now, even though I will be *strong* (strong! strong!) and wrap it in giftwrap to save for Christmas anyway.

You have a great sense of humor, (((Prim))). I was also suprised to find you not only knew about Elfquest but liked it. Guess I shouldn't have been I remember you telling me about PDQ Bach. I should check it out. Weird Al is great too. It was a shame about his parents.

I loved the original Elfquest storyline - I have the first 6 books, 4 of them with the more delicate coloring before Marvel 'ruined' the artwork with its comic-book coloring look. It was Wendy Pini's artwork that drew me in, long ago - I found the tale began to get too weird and less believable to me as it continued, and ended up not pursuing it further, but especially like Cutter's orignial quest in the first 4. Great characters!

Totally agree with you there about EQ! I only like the first series.

As to classical music, Mozart rules. I like some opera. Beethoven and Bach are good too. I like all kinds of music, really.

There are various "eras" of Classical music, but I tend to
"Go for Baroque" :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
I especially like Baroque and Rennaissance and Medieval...
J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel (Yes, it's "frIderic, not frEderick), and Antonio Vivaldi....Vivaldi is BEST!!!

I haven't thought about PDQ Bach in years. I used to have him on a scratched up vinyl record. I wonder where it is? I suppose it doesn't matter, I don't know where my turntable is! Maybe I better go look him up too. Thanks for the reminder, Prim!

I love classical music and played it in my younger years, but I don't recognize the work of a ton of composers by name either. Give me a good violin or piano concerto with a lot of passion in it and I am a happy woman.

Elf Quest? I need more time and a guarantee to live as long as the old Took so I can catch up on some reading! - Elfriend

They're big, graphic novels with lovely artwork - they really were the start of that genre and a large part of the 'anime' style becoming more popular, though I don't see them as anime, per se. The storyline and characters in the first 4 in the series are well worth checking into.

LOL about the turntable - I finally bought a turntable, just so I could listen to all my old records again. My kids were fascinated with 'Mom's Big CDs' - especially how you could run it at different speeds. :-D

This collection I'm getting has "Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice: an Opera in One Unnatural Act" - I can't waiiit! I still remember the Village Idiot Aria.

PDQ Bach ?? Ok, I confess my ignorance... is it anything like "Switched On Bach"? (my mom had an 8-track tape of Bach done on a Moog synthesizer)

Nothing at all like Switched on Bach - this is the alter ego of Professor Schikele, a North Dakota music prof who is a genius at comedic parody on classical works, supposedly written by the "forgotten last son" of J.S. Bach, a black sheep of his family. He employs unusual instruments with his symphonic works, like fog horn, bicycle and balloons. If you know classical at all it is rife with musical in-jokes and humor but also excellent compositions. If you can get one, "the Wurst of PDQ Bach" might be a good introduction - I don't think you'd regret it. :-)

If you like PDQ Bach, try to get something from Gerald Hoffnung too. He's another genius who did great classical music parodies. :-)

Thanks for the tip! - now I have another rabbit trail I get to chase. :-)
