I was playing one of my all-time favorite albums, Thomas Bergersen's "Sun" this afternoon and noted how part of why I like it so much is it is literally amazing All The Way Through. I have some of his other ones but "Sun" really is exceptional.

This made me wonder if some of you might have favorite albums to recommend that you've found to be just an amazing ride start to finish? Good to the the last drop? Any genre or era is fine, I enjoy all kinds of things.

I was a penguin for our Trunk-or-Treat event last night, right down to faux flippers over my shoes. Cozy to wear out in the parking lot, will have to use that one again someday. Wish my dance costuming could just come out of a bag all ready to go like that one did.

I've been hunting diligently for my 40s-themed dance bits for my performance coming up just before Thanksgiving - I'm using a jazzy version of Peggy Lee's "Winter Weather".
Found an ivory-colored rabbit fur 'headband' hat from a vintage shop for my hair, a big pearl necklace among the cheap "bling" jewelry on clearance, a burgundy velvet choker at a teen shop and stretchy faux pearl bracelets. Gave up on finding fingerless burgundy satin gloves and had to order those online, hope they come soon. Putting it with a burgundy crop top layered with a cream lace over-piece, ivory fluffy full skirt and burgundy hip wrap.

Had to buy lipstick and lip liner too - 40s makeup is not my usual style, heh. This is getting expensive, but I'm enjoying it too! Hee! Now if I can just get the dancing part to come out right. If I just flail around, at least I'll look good doing it.

Just a brief music rec for anyone who likes soundtrack/epic instrumental music... I've only now discovered Thomas Bergersen (half of the duo that make Two Steps from Hell) - first heard of his stuff via a Toothless tribute on youtube that was set to 'Dragonrider' (not on these albums but oh well)

It's just....oh....just.... wooooooooah!
If you want to be blown away, try his album "Sun"... but I ended up also getting "Illusions" and "Invincible" and they're all just amazing. 0.o

Oooo, very impressive! I finally had a chance to fill one of the gaps in my 'stuff everyone seems to have seen but me' list by spending an evening watching the 25th anniversary version of the Phantom of the Opera that was done at the Royal Albert Hall, as a friend who had recently discovered it herself had gone on a Phantom-athon of sorts and watched 8 different versions of it.  This was the one she said was best. It didn't latch into the 'fandom' part of me the way some characters do - but I can see why it has appealed.

There was the added treat of Andrew Lloyd Webber coming out at the end with a fun multi-phantom rendition of the main theme sung by the original Christine and 5 of the professional Phantoms over the years.  I enjoy Webber's work, especially 'Cats' and 'Joseph...' and bounced around in my seat when he popped up.

Jolly good operatic stuff.

Gosh, this has been such a long slog from January, I'm seriously looking forward to spring break at the end of the month just so I don't have to drive kids here there and everywhere for a few days.  Can't complain about the weather though, it's been a really mild winter and now it's a lovely, mild day, perfect for grubbing out chickweed and repotting some houseplants.  Got some funky long rubber mats for our front steps to replace the anti-slip strips, they look like a wrought iron leafy design and it really dresses it up, that and a couple new pinwheels and it's positively cheerful.

And I got a walkman! I'm a techie dinosaur to my kids, heck, I still have a drawer full of cassettes, so moving to an mp3 player of my own is quite the leap into the space-age by comparison, lol...gradually learning how to work the thing, amused by thinking to myself that at last I can participate in those memes where they want you to put your player on shuffle and do things with the results.  We must keep our priorities straight, after all! :-D

We've also had another church join us in our building to share the space starting this past week - I went to their Bible study last week just to meet some of them and they were a hoot, looking forward to making that a regular thing, I'm always up for a good study, they're always fun and/or interesting.  This weekend we're doing a St. Pat's day potluck with the two congregations so folks can get to know one another, so far so good.  Our preschool is really struggling to find students (or rather, families who can afford to pay for preschool) so it's nice to have something working well.

In my ongoing attempts to clean out 'stuff' we aren't using, I tackled two large drawers stuffed with audio cassette tapes that we had from mine and the mister's youthfuller days. Tried to be ruthless, which is difficult when sidetracked by "Wow! I remember when I first got this tape back when I was in high school..." type bursts from the past.

Filled a grocery bag halfway with tapes to toss into an upcoming rummage sale (go me!). Made a stack of tapes we decided we really *would* like to listen to again and then plugged a small stack of money into ordering those albums on cd before adding them to their tapey brethren in the bag. Reluctantly pried out of my parentally nostalgic fingers a lot of kiddie tapes (Awww, remember when (insert child's name who is now a teenager) used to sing along with this when she was a toddler....?), etc.

Gads. Did I really used to listen to Barry Manilow? Scott Wesley Brown? Oooold Manhatten Transfer? Guess my tastes have changed. I *did* order a cheap cd of 'world's greatest polkas' and got rid of the polka tapes I got from my grandma, heh... guess if a polka breaks out, we can supply the music, heaven forbid my grandmother's granddaughter would not have at least one polka album in her collection. ;-)

And why is there STILL an entire drawer full? >_< Not fair.

Out picking blueberries in the sun, enjoying the sound of the leaves in the trees when along came an ice cream truck playing.... La Cucaracha. I mean - really? 0.o

The regulars around our area every summer are 'Home Home on the Range' and 'Turkey in the Straw' with occasional appearances of a bright yellow one playing 'Ode to Joy'. We'll see if this one manages to make a living with that tune or not. *snert*

Just got the mail and found my copy of Globus' Epicon album arrived - much rejoicing and bouncing around ensued in our household - the music is simply stunning, music trends for this next decade bode well if this is any indication. Nice that we were able to find a copy of the older release, the one with the text on the cover as it includes faves such as Crusaders of the Light which was strangely missing on the later one.

I love seeing more use of classical instruments in 'pop' music of late - really, after how-many-decades of piano/electric guitar/drums the occasional violin, cello, oboe, etc. sound really, really fab and add so much lost richness and depth. Ahhh.

Haven't done a meme for a while, this one seems to have reached out a tentacle and snagged part of my evening - I blame [livejournal.com profile] curuchamion and [livejournal.com profile] lothithil equally for this.

How it's supposed to work:
A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same. (Nah.... what if they're busy and it just annoys them?)
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it." (Sure you can! There isn't even a curse of toenail fungus or anything threatening to zot you either way)

So here's seven snatches of the fabric of my days, or er... something. )

I don't know what it was that got me thinking about it again, but yesterday P.D.Q. Bach came to mind. I used to have some of his "A Little Nightmare Music" and others on a scratchy tape in college and adored it. Wandered over to Amazon to see what he was up to and stumbled into a treasure trove of PDQ-ness - I wanted them ALL... Ended up ordering the big collected set as my birthday/Christmas present to myself, and used my daughter's gift certificate for Amazon to pay for part of it as she wants to hear it too and says it can be 'from her to me' that way to help us both rationalize it. We were singing a couple of the 'ground rounds' together as we typed it all in. "Jaaaaane...my Jane....you are my queeeeen...." *snicker*

I love classical music, but not in the intense scholarly way - I can only make wild guesses at the names of composers and pieces when I hear them - but that quirk in my humor makes me gravitate to Prof. Schikele and his great parodies. Probably the same quirk that makes me love Weird Al and Dr. Demento. Can't wait for it to get here now, even though I will be *strong* (strong! strong!) and wrap it in giftwrap to save for Christmas anyway.
