Nothing like my family being gone for most of this week to make me realize how much food we all go through - I didn't bother to grocery shop or cook the whole time and wow is my fridge empty now. They're all back as of today - time to hit the grocery store treadmill once again.

I remember my mom talking about how long it took her once my brother and I moved out to adjust the amount she would buy and cook - she'd still make big casseroles and then she and my dad would get absolutley sick of it trying to finish it off themselves, or she'd buy too much produce and half of it would rot. Her freezer had big roasts in it that she didn't want to cook because it would be too much meat so she'd save them for when we visited, leaving us with the vague impression they were always eating roasts.

I hadn't realized how much I buy is on autopilot until not as much was needed. We had five teenagers living here a couple years back and there was a veritable food tsunami flying through my kitchen, we threw away produce and froze casseroles ourselves after that passed. Hard to believe one day it will only be two of us. I suppose then I get to buy big roasts.
