Oh yes, I'm sure of it - I've a number of things in my own home that were acquired in just that way. Even this sofa was non-conventional, having been purchased from a company that rented stuff for executives to use as short term furnishings; they were relocating and wanted to dump all their heavy furniture rather than have to haul it to another warehouse. We got a microwave there too for $15, it had never been used for anything but popping some bags of popcorn.
