Okay, I'm out on a limb here but want all of you from the Fanclub boards to have a heads-up. There's going to be a change in the Decipher boards very soon - possibly this week. It will be a shift to the standard YaBB format of message board. Some of you are already familiar with these, others will find them confusing at first but once you get used to them, not too bad.

*******This is NOT to be talked about, mentioned or inferred on the boards themselves yet!****** Please - it could really rock the boat for us. Decipher wants it mum until they iron out some background details, and it is at this point in time still confidential.

BUT I want all of you to have time to think about it and get used to it, not have it sprung on you all at once. Decipher doesn't understand the community we have. There will probably be a small overlap where both kinds may be available, but I'm not for certain on that. Watch for the "Real Announcement" from Decipher on all of the boards soon, then proceed from there on adjusting your registration, etc. and remember "Don't Panic"!

Now, where did I put my manual on "duck and cover"?

"Duck and Cover"

*Gets elvishly invented duct(k) tape for the chaos soon to enue on MBs* (((prim))) Thanks for the heads-up. I personally tend to panic less if avanced notice is given when a change is about to occur. AS long as we work through the changes together all will be well. *gets techno gizmos for dunderheads book out and reads up on strange message board*

Thanks for the warning, Prim!

Like Cal, I prefer a little advance notice. The MB's have been a home for me for years now, and a change will surely be a shock. You can trust me to keep my trap shut (about this, anyway) *grins*

You've been warned!

Thanks, Prim. This is a good change, right? It's what a lot of us have wanted for a long time... to have discussion topics that stay around for more than a few days. Anyway, I look forward to it!

Have you been to Bucklebury? I think Stef uses Yabb there or something like it. It's the more standard kind of message board used where the active topics pop back up to the top, you can have avatars (and a bunch of other annoying fun stuff in your posts. I hope that Decipher goes the way that Torc has gone and makes it possible to turn off all that stuff in your prefs. That stuff takes so long to load if you have a dial up. Even if you don't, it takes longer to load pages.

It's gonna be like when a church changes something...some people will leave in a huff and others will love the change and stick around. We'll weather the storm if people are interested in staying there. If not, well...there's always LJ! :-)

Thanks for the warning.

YaBB stands for "Yet another Bulletin Board". It's a format you have probably seen and used but just didn't realize what it was called... =)

Unlike the Fan Club boards, the posts are not "threaded" like an outline (with indented replies). It's a lot like the FotK message boards (EZboard.com). Old messages are archived on pages within a discussion instead of scrolling off the server like they do currently in the Fan Club.

I like the way LJ handles replies. Journal "topic" posts are displayed on the main page and the replies are threaded inside each journal topic. I find that the visual threading helps me keep track of who is responding to whom... somthing that can get confusing with the YaBB style.

thanks for the warning, I really appreciate that. I always liked the Decipher boards because they were NOT in that standard message board format, but well, I'll get used to the change :-) as long as the moderators don't get changed too.... ;-)

Yeah...I don't like having to "quote" someone further up the thread if you want to reply directly to them. The Narnia boards I frequent are like that too. The nice thing about a Yabb board though is most of them let you turn on a feature to let you know if someone has responded in a thread you are watching. That's a nice feature. This Narnia one even gives you a bit of the actual post in the e-mail so you can read it without actually going to the board itself.

I know alot of people have been critical over the years of the style of Decipher's boards, but I kinda like 'em and I'll miss 'em when they're gone. ::sigh:: oh well.

How marvelous of you to warn us!!! It will be a shock in a way, even knowing it is coming. It is hard to get used to change when we have gotten so familiar with something. But, I think it won't be a bad change. It is hard to let go of the familiar, but sometimes it is actually for the better and we may grow because of it.

Oops, getting philosophical here!

Anyway, I'm slightly familiar with Bucklebury -- I have an account there, though I forget to check in usually! So I am not totally wet behind the ears with the new thing...

Thanks again for warning us; we can then help calm the others who get upset at the change as we will be prepared. :-)
