The Fanfic Meme - another round
Jan. 12th, 2005 07:13 pmGacked from OBT and others now also - made me have to remember, and think.
1) What was the first piece of fan fiction you ever read?
The first I recall was a little before the first movie came out - it was a poem, about the Anduin by Ardulin Brooks:

It was this poetry being expressed on the boards that gave me 'permission' of sorts to write about some of the portions of the tale that had affected me emotionally, to try to wrap words around them. Still, it was a little bit before I could work up the courage to post my first one (see next question..)
2) What was the first story you ever wrote?
In my case, it was poems rather than stories, though I did write a few short parodies like "The Fellowship of Barbie" and "Dark! Leafy!" I found a confidence in the poetic form that eluded me with serious tales. My first poem was Pippin in Gondor and it took me an entire week to get up the nerve to post it.

The first (and only) serial tale I've managed so far is Bilbo's Nothing of Note, which is haranguing me that it is unfinished still.
3) What story are you the most proud of?
I have several personal favorites of my own in the poetry, ones that took a lot of time and effort - I can't seem to pin only one down; two I would mention would be Cirdan and Hollin. Overall, I am most pleased with how Nothing of Note is turning out so far. I never expected it to be so long, so hard, or so satisfying to work on - it takes a lot of effort to sustain something like that.

4) What story are you least proud of?
I have a few poems that really feel unfinished and 'clunky' to me - I keep hoping I'll take the time to go back and polish them up. I may manage it yet - I also didn't really care for some of my adaptations, but I don't know if they count as 'stories.'
5) What is your favorite format to write in? (vignette, short story, long story, etc.)
Poetry! Poetry, poetry, poetry!
6) What fic(s) have you read that suprised you?
I have been amazed and moved by so many of the writers here - I concur with those who have mentioned Sacrament and Firewood - I would add just about anything by NorthStar, Kimby or Lin and much of Varda's writings as well... and many others! Where do I stop?
Outside of the fanclub folks, I have been utterly floored by PlasticChevy's The Steward and the King - if you haven't read this one yet, go forth and read!
The MNS add-on question:
7) What was your biggest challenge ever in writing your own stories?
Coming up with a plot. I really didn't think I could sustain a longer tale because I didn't feel I really had any tale to tell. NoN hit me all in a moment one day, but when I outlined it I thought I had maybe 10-15 short chapters, max. (haha!) - Being a complete newbie to serial tales I didn't realize how they grow, and take on a mind of their own, and the new challenge has been finding the time to keep at it and finish it without it dragging on too much.
Thanks - this was fun.

Insert LoG here and you will understand my current dilemma! ;-) That serial tale has passed 20 chapters, and it's only covered 4 days or so since the breaking of the Fellowship. =:-O I wonder how long it will take me to cover the remaining weeks? Let's see, at one chapter a month (if I'm lucky), that would be... *sigh* I know what you mean, LOL!
