And here I was actually contemplating getting a paid LJ account. Egads.

The Russian news release indicating that they are very likely not going to be backing down from their goal of opening up our cosy, private LJ firesides to the blaring, sterile, echoing caverns of Facebook I do believe a migration to Dreamwidth may be in order.

If you need a code for Dreamwidth, let me know, I have several available! I've had an account there for awhile now, perhaps I should think more earnestly about settling in over there...

Yes, for the first time ever, I am thinking about migrating to Dreamdwidth too. It's not that the cross-posting is likely to personally affect me -- it's not -- but I'm very upset with the idea of it. It's clear that LJ either does not understand a large proportion of their users, or doesn't care about us. They seem to want to change LJ into a Facebook application, which may give them lots more casual users, but will drive away those of us who had made this a safe little home on the internet.

I'm still giving them the chance that they would at least realise how most people are against it and create a button that allows you to block any cross-posting from your LJ. They are aware how vehemently against the idea their users are.

Hnngh. I was afraid of that. Facebook and Twitter must have had to make some adaptions also in order to be compatible, so LJ must be caught between a rock and a hard place now (though it wouldn't be if it had ASKED FIRST).

If it can just put some controls in place -- letting people decide whether they want FB and TW users to be able to comment like open-source users; exempting locked posts from pingbacks; allowing users to turn off the option of anybody crossposting from their own journals or communities -- it could be made benign. I suppose, though, they were expecting it to lead to a mass of "yay I like this post *crosspost*" comments on FB and TW and that's all they thought would happen.

Thank you dear lady - I already asked one person for one, but if they've run out I may be at your mailbox, hat in hand.

I wonder who approached who first with this idea, if it was fb looking for more of their aggressive expansion or if someone at LJ was an fb addict and it seemed logical to them. Who knows... now that they've made the investment I think the best we can hope for is they let folks shut down the crosspost options for their own journals, no matter what option is chosen by those replying to it.

The optimistic part of me is hoping they'll at least make proper concession to those who don't want their LJ splatted onto facebook or random fb people popping up in their journals. :-P But looking at their customer-response history of late...well, I just hope I'll be pleasantly surprised and not hold my breath in the meantime.

I noted some discussion on their main response page regarding their possibly banking on replacing the thousands of "old time" LJ people who would be upset enough to leave with a new fresh wave of facebook people. They may simply see it as tapping in to a new market, the old market be hanged. I can hope not, but depending on the views of those making the decisions, only time will tell.

I suspect it was Facebook, just because if FB and LJ were characters FB would be more the type and if FB had the reins it explains why LJ has been so uncommunicative -- they need to check back with their FB overlords.

Also on the subject of your subject line and that kitty icon... a portmanteau name for Facebook and Twitter would be "fbbbbt". XD

Did you see, over in [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush, Beth has posted a linky to a very quick fix which will remove the crosspost tickyboxes from your journal? I've already applied it to mine!

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking in suspecting the FB overlords... ;-)

If this lasts until the weekend I'm taking my DreamWidth invite and ditching. I here there are codes for copying your journal content, and though it'll still be a giant pain in the ass it's worth it for the privacy.

One thing I'm confused about are the pingbacks:

The ticky boxes let you link comments to facebook and twitter (whether they be locked or not and hence the fail)

...and the ping backs let you know who has made the link? Yes/no?

Indeed! Problem is that still doesn't address the potential for privacy issues - though I object more on principle and because I dislike anything invasive, not being someone who posts anything objectionable or overly private myself.

No guru myself, but I believe that is correct. And somehow I don't think you'll be alone is surging off to Dreamwidth - sounds like they're having quite a spike over there!

Doesn't surprise me at all, since most old-time users have been grandfathered in with all the perks of paid accounts without having to pay. They also hold permanent account users in contempt as they can no longer get money from us on an annual basis. If permanent account users and early adopters leave, it's no skin off their nose.

Edit: Do you have a link for where you saw this? Just curious.
