And here I was actually contemplating getting a paid LJ account. Egads.

The Russian news release indicating that they are very likely not going to be backing down from their goal of opening up our cosy, private LJ firesides to the blaring, sterile, echoing caverns of Facebook I do believe a migration to Dreamwidth may be in order.

Yes, for the first time ever, I am thinking about migrating to Dreamdwidth too. It's not that the cross-posting is likely to personally affect me -- it's not -- but I'm very upset with the idea of it. It's clear that LJ either does not understand a large proportion of their users, or doesn't care about us. They seem to want to change LJ into a Facebook application, which may give them lots more casual users, but will drive away those of us who had made this a safe little home on the internet.

I noted some discussion on their main response page regarding their possibly banking on replacing the thousands of "old time" LJ people who would be upset enough to leave with a new fresh wave of facebook people. They may simply see it as tapping in to a new market, the old market be hanged. I can hope not, but depending on the views of those making the decisions, only time will tell.

Doesn't surprise me at all, since most old-time users have been grandfathered in with all the perks of paid accounts without having to pay. They also hold permanent account users in contempt as they can no longer get money from us on an annual basis. If permanent account users and early adopters leave, it's no skin off their nose.
