Just thinking how fb does something strange to the brain. One of my kids was upset the other day because she was trying to contact her friend for a question about homework but "she hasn't shown up on facebook!! I don't know what to do!"...
"Have you tried CALLING her?"
*sheepish* "Oh...uh, no."

I've been gradually deleting and removing stuff from my fb over this week - can't seem to make myself just shut the darn thing off all at once so it's more like fading out, but as I get down to a tiny handful it's feeling - freeing. Nice. Peaceful. Ahhh.

I shouldn't be online, because I leave for California in exactly six hours (that's when the plane takes off) and there is SO MUCH TO GET DONE AUGH.

It's better that you delete everything first before you close your account. I've heard from people that their account kept re-opening because the 'Addons' kept pinging the account, which kept resetting the "final closeout" date.

I saw that too! That's what I did for nearly an hour earlier this morning...just sat and clicked "remove", still some to go. I'm glad I've only had it for a year and rarely used it - I can't imagine what a mess someone who used it all the time for longer would face. Wish I could bill LiveTwitFace for all the hours of my life they've now used up by making me have to check settings/delete things/notify people/etc. with this Thing They Did.

Gah. Time to think Happy Thoughts. Lunch time. I shall go finish off the leftover chicken ravioli with fresh pesto - and make a green tea frappe to go with it. That's better.

I know! I have typewriter that I use for labels in the small library I keep and every year the little kids come in at the beginning of the year and ask "What IS that?" with fascination. I have to explain that it's like a computer but without the monitor...that I hit the key and it makes the letter on the piece of paper. They think that is brilliant. Ha!

Kids these days. I remember when we passed notes in class. On these sheets called PAPER instead of those newfangled electronic texts!

Ah, yes, kids these days! They all agog-ed at me when I told them that when I started college, the internet was just getting going, and we had to go to a separate, central building to check our email on VOX terminals. Heh.

Reminds me of my attempt to explain to my kids how we used to drive into town and rent a movie and a VHS player in a huge black suitcase and lug it home and hook it up to our tv to watch a show - and that was a BIG deal! It was way too expensive to own your own copies of a tape - but to watch the movie of your choosing when you wanted to without commercials, they have no concept of how amazing and futuristic that was to us.

Facebook has been one of those things that utterly baffled me since I first grudgingly joined in my freshman year of college after being poked 800000000 time to do so. I didn't get the hooplah then, and that was when you still had to have an e-mail ending in .edu to sign up. I still don't get it. My account still exists, but I wiped all the personal details a year or two ago and I think I might sign in once every six months or so.

It really is kind of scary the sort of personal information people post on that website. I'm sure your daughter is smarter than that, but I think I'd be afraid to let a child have an account on that thing (I guess it's good I don't have kids, or they would be living under a rock).

I know what you mean - I held her off until after she was 13, then only let her on under a pseudonym. I'm only okay with getting rid of my own fb in part because my husband is still on there to see who/how she is interacting with.

Reading some of the comments here what really gets me are cartoons. When I was a kid it was after school for maybe an hour and Saturday mornings. That was it.
Now they are on 24/7, on DVD, itunes, or on-demand. Saturday morning cartoons always seemed like such a special treat.
To add, I remember so looking forward to Frosty and Rudolph, my kids don't because people have given them the dvds as gifts.

Yes, this! I looked forward to Saturday mornings because that was when the cartoons were on. If the cartoons weren't on, I couldn't watch them. I also remember getting excited about each year's showing of "The Wizard of Oz" on TV.
