I just got a great email note from my dad - he discovered my "Nothing of Note" and declared - after apparently reading it all in one fell swoop (at that point, 68 chapters) - he had a 'dead butt.'

Enjoying it and intrigued by the Brave New World of Tolkien fanfic, he then requested other author's names that I thought were a good ride through Middle-earth. I sent him a short list of the ones I consider our shining stars... and then received this:

"Aloha; Still gnawing at the ropes that hold this story in place, like a blasted rat! When I first read your "best authors" advice, I MISread :Intense and Angry" It was, of course, "angsty", BUT, it definitely suckered me in. I am now on my second "dead butt" day pursuing this tale of the actual capture of the Hobbits! Sonovabitch!! The bad guys HAVE them!! Not good, sez I. BUT, this is such a collage of the MOVIE/ TOLKIEN/ And PERSONAL TALENT, that it is virtually seamless...All Hail Northstar. My butt gets even more numb. My mind HOWEVER is invigorated, I am hanging onto my hat, as the Queen of Cliff Hangers does me in. Dad"

All hail NorthStar, our (((([livejournal.com profile] psychotic_kiwi)))))

Aww, Prim!!!! * tears up...really*

You directed your Dad to me????? And he likes it? That is so amazing and gratifying and rewarding and ( I'm running out of words, here). Thank you and thank your dad for me, SO MUCH! *cries*

The least I can do is send the poor man a soft cushion for the 'dead butt" problem!

Of course I did - you're a fabulous writer and I needed to hook him with a good one! He's an avid reader and a newbie to the concept of fan-fiction in any form, so he's a greatly appreciative audience. If he keeps going, I may send him one of those little inflatable 'donut' cushions for grins. :-D

You started him out well! It was our dear NorthStar (and her polar-counterpart V) who sated my first thirst for Tolkienfic.

Cool dad you got there, Prim!

((((hugs you tight)))) I should send him one of those "Maine Pine" pillows so at least he could get some aromatherapy while he reads. :)

Sounds like you come by your sassy sense of humor honestly, LOL!

That's it! I am still so overwhelmed with all the fanfic I want to read that I never start any of the epics and I just stick with the little quick reads like Din and Sil and Agape's Drabbles. How do I choose between the likes of you and Varda and PK and Lothithil and OBT and and and...? Arrrggggghhhhh! I am officially starting one of them tonight. Which ever one I get to first. Whoever it is will be hearing from me when you keep me up all night, lol!

He's a poet and an artist too - I guess offbeat runs in the family. ;-)

How to choose? Depends on what mood you are in - do you want angst, or in-depth relationships or something lighter? Mine is the 'kiddy-ride' in the amusement park...very low angst and few cliff-hangers. Others (like Varda, Avondster and our Kiwi) will make you leave little claw-marks in your chair. :-D

LOL! Oh dear! I wish that made it easier, but I like both! As it happens I have already started PK's and am naturally completely hooked. I will be happily sleepy tomorrow. But still I am torn, I have read a bit of Varda - when Legolas was DEAD. That threw me for a loop, I can tell you! Now I need to go back to the beginning of that odyssey. I have also read just a bit of Nothing of Note and you have a way with hobbits, dear lady! Yours I am printing, and I will read it aloud to my husband for our story time. I'll get back to you with the undoubtedly rave reviews when we are done!

Well, I can only give you an idea of mine...I sent the hobbits into the hands of the Uruk-Hai, had Sam kill off Gollum and Frodo become a wraith...but I also sent Boromir to an elven kegger where Haldir led a congo line and Gimli snuck Nair into Leggy's shampoo...

Varda is heavier stuff, lots of drama. She has the gift of intertwining the book, the films and her own characters seamlessly. Loth is amazing for her imagination and characterization. Lin is a very elegant writer. Prim makes even the smallest details come to life and add amazing impact to a story. Take your pick - and we are but a very few. Scores of other countless serialists, poets, goofballs and drabblers abound. Nuroriel writes lovely drabbles as well, and OBT has some lovely and well -written stories in the scrapbook as well.
