Brought to you by the letter W
Aug. 5th, 2008 08:05 amI was intrigued by this little writer's meme, thanks Meneleth.
What's the last thing you wrote?
A Custom Design - My third installment in a series for Doctor Who (I write for the first three Docs). Just finished it yesterday.
Was it any good?
Well, I'm sure enjoying myself and the feedback is positive, so yeah… I'm good with this one.
What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
I have some pathetic poetry from grade-school, and a horrible short story I wrote in junior high that makes me want to crawl under a rock from embarrassment.
Write poetry?
Do cows go moo?
Angsty poetry?
All over the map! Oi. Poetry does lend itself to angsty things, doesn't it?
Most fun character you ever wrote?
That's a hard one to judge, I usually enjoy whomever I'm writing at the moment the most. I would guess Bilbo has to take the prize here, though.
Most annoying character you ever wrote?
I remember being irked by various background characters, but I suppose Lotho was the worst. Then again, who likes Lotho? Gah.
Best plot you ever wrote?
My personal fave right now is 'A Custom Vehicle' - all the elements of classic Who clicked, and it was even my own plot instead of just elaborating on someone else's. Go me, lol… that and 'The Shining Furrow' but that one's more emo.
Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?
I liked where the Arkenstone went in 'Stone of Erebor' - mostly because when I was writing it I really didn't know where it had gone either! Is that normal?
How often do you get writer's block?
Rarely blocked, but often bogged. It feels more like she's wading through molasses than stopping, so I have to wait for her to catch up.
How do you fix it?
Wait, do mundane things, weed the yard. She'll get there eventually. Usually in the middle of something else, leaving me to frantically jot notes on wrappers and other scraps until I can get home.
Do you type or write by hand?
Combo!
Do you save everything you write?
Eeee-yup. I print the better ones and keep them in a binder too, I think I'm paranoid about losing them.
Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
Absolutely - is anything a writer does ever truly abandoned? They'll get their day in the sun, or be worked into another fic someday…
What's your favorite thing that you've written?
Phoooo - that's a hard one. I would guess a mixed basket of poetry gets that slot. Hm. I was also quite proud of a gap-filler I wrote for a little-known series of books, but no one reads it because it's little-known, heh.
What's everyone else's favorite thing that you've written?
Depends on the audience. My Tolkien-folks enjoy Bilbo's romps and the Whovians have really responded to my 'Annual UNIT picnic' fic.
Do you ever show people your work?
I post most of what I write, though there certainly have been a few of those strange relatives I keep in the basement too.
Who's your favorite constructive critic?
My daughter is merciless with me, which is a good thing.
Did you ever write a novel?
I never meant to, but one of them did end up that long.
Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?
Sci-Fi and fantasy, absolutely. Horror, heck no. The world is dark enough as it is, I see no reason to add to it.
Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?
Some romantic overtones in a couple stories, but that's about it. No teen drama, oh gag…
What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
You'll find no slash *ever* coming from my pen…or keyboard…
How many writing projects are you working on right now?
Uh, two. No, three. Oh wait, four… define 'working on' and 'now'….
Do you want to write for a living?
That would be uber-cool, wouldn't it? Alas, I only write in non-paid publications.
Have you ever won an award for your writing?
Yup.
Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
Yup, but nothing with a large circulation.
Ever written something in script or play format?
Nod, nod. Had some of my plays performed, which was good fun.
What is your favorite word?
Favorite word? What a bizarre question.
Do you ever write based on yourself?
Shoot me if I Mary-Sue! However, I've noted elements do faintly slip in here and there….
Which of your characters most resembles you?
As mentioned above, I suppose that would be (strangely enough) Bilbo. Must be why I relate to him so well.
Where do you get ideas for your characters?
An entire story can grow around a single mental image or a single question, the characters are often 'borrowed' from fandoms, so they come prepackaged, like microwave meals, and I get to steal snacks from other author's brains.
Do you ever write based on your dreams?
Nope. Too incoherent or surreal.
Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
Happy endings, most certainly, my world likes healthy doses of happiness. I usually save my 'sadness' for poetry, though I have been known to dangle a thread or two.
Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?
Don't think so - but what an intriguing idea!
Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
You bet!
Does music help you write?
Not really, in fact it can distract. I write best in quiet, completely alone.
Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?
I don't think I've encountered surprise, but I've certainly seen confusion when they ask exactly what it is I write. I tailor what I admit to according to the audience. "Oh yes, I write history articles for the newsletter" instead of "Oh yes, I write hobbits and who."
Also, does anyone else really get irked that they have to stop writing long enough to get groceries and generally take care of their family? I need someone to hire a maid service to dust around me as I scribble sometimes.
In other news, Rosie and Ic are settled into their new house (sort of - cardboard city!) about 10-15 minutes from me, and we're all going to the lake this week. Yay!

Date: 2008-08-05 07:45 pm (UTC)My annoyance is having to quit writing to go to work. I don't get much writing time at home, so not so many interruptions there.

Date: 2008-08-05 09:00 pm (UTC)I like it there because you can sort by Doctor or search by companion, etc. to ferret out favorite goodies to read. And I *adore* your avi, though I wonder at the choice of very-tall-Four for the 'little doctor' - shoulda been Two or Seven. Hee!
