Master Fic List contemplation.... worth the effort?

I've noted a few folks here have cobbled up a 'Master List' with links to all of their fics, and while I've enjoyed clicking around on them I really can't decide if it's worth the time and effort to do one myself. I mean, well - first of all there's so darn much of it and it would take a bit of doing... and secondly isn't it well enough served via the author searches at ff.net, Stories of Arda and Teaspoon? Hm.

Am I just contemplating giving up several hours to reinvent the wheel?

Those of you with lists for your fic, have you found them to be useful? Or was it 'meh, whatever' in the long run?

I haven't done a list, since my stuff is mostly drabbles and the like, and I do have a community to also cross-post my writing in, but I will say that I find other writers' master lists to be of great help, esp. when I'm trying to catch up with their work. :) HTH!

I don't think I've written enough fic to justify a master list, and I'm quite embarrassed by anything that was written under a username other than this one, so resurrecting old stuff = BAD IDEA.

Although I could potentially create a Living Document of some sort, I suppose...

Like vonquixote, I haven't written enough to justify a master list. The closest thing I have is a list to all the chapters of my girl!Doctor fics, but that's just to help people who might want to read those.

I did produce a list, which I suspect was an exercise in ego (and JavaScript). But my ostensible excuse was that the last time there was an LJ meme reading "choose one of my fanfics...", I couldn't produce a handy list in one place.

Now I've got it, I use it quite frequently, mainly because it can filter by character, which the Teaspoon author page can't.

I found it worthwhile because my fic is posted at various places and no one place has it all -- Whofic including drabbles on Teaspoon, longfic including non-Whofic on ff.net, miscellaneous non-Who drabbles elsewhere, etc. And I did have a lot of drabbles. XD So yes, having a central LJ masterlist was helpful to me.

Well, I haven't had mine very long - I honestly just put it together so I could do that "choose one of my fics" meme I just ganked from Clocketpatch. ;-) And remembering to keep it updated is being a bit of a pain... but I do like having it around so I don't have to wonder "Oh, did I ever put that one up on LJ, or is it just on Teaspoon..."

I would love to see a master list of your fic, if that's any help...

Would this be something that would live on your LJ? I think it would be helpful for folks who only know you from one of your fandoms - unless you are crossposting everything to ff.net, in which case it would be a duplication of effort. MHO

I'm all for helping readers - and keep at it, you're a creative enough lady that I expect your muse may explore some of the earlier Doctors in time. :-) A chapter listing would be a good foundation for starting off.

Not a "bad" idea, your 'resurrecting the dead' - it may give you a chance to edit them up, or even use some as a springboard to new fics is my thought.

The character tags here are tremendously useful - you have a good point in that and it may be the strongest reason to make it worth the while. I do like having the 'all in one' spot for others.

And a fine drabbler you are! Oh gosh... I hadn't considered listing out all the drabbles individually, there must be over a hundred. I would suddenly look like a *very* productive writer. ;-)

I think the gathering all the scattered eggs into one basket may be a good exercise, if a long one. Ff.net is the closest thing I have to an "all flavours" list and it doesn't include much of my poetry.

Aw, really? *blushes* Well, even if I stick with this series of fics for now, I'll still have the chance to practise on the earlier Doctors - Two and Three have already made cameos, and one of the upcoming fics is to be a multi-Doctor adventure.

Your list is the one that made me start chewing on the idea again - that and realizing long ago it was someone's master list on LJ that made me discover the wealth of whofic here (I think it was Eponymous Rose or Lizbee).

Thanks for the feedback! The effort duplication is what I was wondering - but now I've also had someone tell me that they never go to ff.net because of all the ads (I have ad-blockers so I'd forgotten it even had any). In terms of 'good marketing' (if fic in search of readers could be considered such) it looks like rolling up the sleeves on the javascript might be something to pick away at after all.

I made mine because I find other people's so handy. Finding their DW fic is fine, although I really like being able to list it in Doctor order, which you can't do on Teaspoon, but running around between three or four different sites and working out whether that's the same fic... A Master list would be handy.

I just like lists and keeping things tidy and in order though. I don't regret doing mine. I tried last year, but my html was rubbish and LJ rich text editor even worse. Now I can do basic html, I just had it as a private post and popped fics in when I had a spare moment - not too bad.

I'd love to see yours, but don't give up the time unless you really would like to.

Apropos of nothing Prim, I just looked again at the LOTR scrapbook posts and wasted an hour of my work time in the office laughing quietly to myself.

It looks like it would be worth the effort, though I may be verrry slow at getting it reasonably complete and running, it's now on my to-do list. I've found others very handy, it only seems right to return the favor.
