Went out to move my sprinkler from where it had been sprinkling away near the lilac bush, giving the ferns, vinca and hostas a drink in this dry season - Turning it off, I went to pull it up from the ground when I became aware of a chorus of little cheeps - birds! Little wet chickadees and bush-tits, a cloud of them all hopping about in the dripping lilacs where they'd been bathing. Literally surrounded by happy little wet balls of feathers I had to just smile at all of them and then ducked as the bbbrrrrrr of the hummingbird pair that have been nesting here whirred past seeking their share of the bath party before it was over, a wonder and a treat to see them all so comfortable with me so near. The robins waited on the lawn, eyeballing me curiously but were quick to take their hopping into the 'summer rain' that I soon started on the garden beside them.

Just a moment that seemed worth writing down.

This entry makes me smile. :-) A cloud of birds, happy little wet balls of feathers, the hummingbirds bbbrrrrrring along. I've caught sight of a hummer or two lately, buzzing upwards, then going into a startling crash dive, sometimes flying in circles after that, or repeating the buzz upwards and the dive. I saw one right by the open screen door today, but didn't hear its distinctive bbbrrrrrr, a sound that always pleases me. I'm always surprised when they actually pause to rest occasionally.

Birds are just wonderful creatures, I enjoy them so much. What a quiet and still world it sadly be without them.

I love the little nature moments you write down for us! :D

(Most of the "nature" I've been seeing lately is of either the human or fossilized variety - there's no place like a college campus for people-watching! All these amazingly detailed bits of backstories just trailing around in the open... as GK Chesterton said, "What I like about this novelist (God) is that he takes such trouble with his minor characters." *g*)

I love Chesterton's way of looking at life, should go read more of him. And you're completely right! There's few places so fun for people-watching and mulling on what they are doing and why, farmer's markets and occasionally crowded malls give it competition, but it's not as potentially profound.

I saw them later too, all swooping to take turns flying through the spray, it's so cuuute!

Very truly spoken - I look forward to the day when all these little delicate creatures will (also) have no reason to fear.

Lovely! Usually around our place the birds keep high up in the trees and only come down to fight each other for the cherries in the cherry tree for a week and a half.

You must have very tall trees! We have all levels - huge, small, in between... this lilac is really more of a tree than a bush itself, it's fairly old, but it apparently makes a very nice sprinkler-spa.

OK, maybe you are a pixie, not a fairy. Can you be both?

Very evocative and much more interesting than my little suburban garden.

Oh, what a thoroughly happy-making experience.

I've never had it happen to me, but I did get a big kick out of watching crows play in a sprinkler last summer.
