French toast and farewell to Snowy

Note to self - do not try to catch up on journal posts while simultaneously babysitting a griddle full of french toast. And misplacing the spatula and running around in a circle going "I can't find my spatula!" prompting my entire family to suddenly begin reciting the Spatula City (Spatula City! SPATULA City!) commercial from UHF.

Been a mixed sort of day, started off badly with finding one of my parakeets in a bad way from being egg-bound (pretty seriously) then having to find a vet who treats small birds, then getting her there only to find what I'd already figured, that we'd have to put her down. The only good side of that is it was Snowy, the mean bird, not Sherbet the nice one - now Sherbet won't have to spend every day in a cage with a broody, dominant hen who attacks her from time to time, so overall maybe an improvement though I will miss old Snowy and we'll have to find Sherbet a new friend.

So considering it started off with putting down a small pet, the rest of the day's been pretty good... found some nice stuff for my Etsy shop including a vintage "space race" card game we're going to try playing, worked at the food cupboard bagging beans and filling little bottles of shampoo, making french toast with maple extract in them as an experiment (Next time, more extract), etc.

Just maundering about life, I guess - hope yours is also on an upswing!

I'm sorry to hear about your bird -- ours made a bid for freedom (ie escaped her cage while hanging out on the front porch), but it was also a mean bird (literally bit the hand that fed it), so I'm sorry to say I'm not missing her all that much. It's a crummy way to start the day, but I suppose it can only get better, right?

We lost a much-loved little guy about four years ago that way - he got to fly around the room and liked to goggle out the window from the windowsill while I was cleaning his cage and someone opened the front door... we could hear him chirping away up in our huge trees for a couple days then he was gone. Miss him, this one....not so much.

What's egg-bound mean?

I had a good day. Any day that includes mention of "reverse polarity" in a college class is a good day. (See, the magnetic field of the earth flips upside down from time to time. What we've got now is "normal polarity" - oh, scientific entitlement, I love you anyway - and the other kind is "reverse polarity".)

No, I did not squee out loud in class. ;-)

(There was also an unexpected cell phone ringtone that remarked in the middle of class, "I have a bad feeling about this." Quite a good day altogether, especially for having started with an all-nighter and a very lame paper.)

That's when a hen's egg essentially gets stuck, either because it's malformed or because she has some other physical issue. She end up unable to complete the laying and it can get very nasty. :-( Some female birds just randomly lay eggs from time to time - Sherbet never has, but Snowy laid maybe 2-3 every year and always got really moody when she did. The last egg was weirdly shaped and uneven, so I was afraid something might be going wrong and it sure did, complete with prolapse. I'm actually glad I was recently re-reading James Herriott, because of him I knew immediately what I was looking at and what to call it when telling the vet.

Seriously? You had a reverse of polarity in your class? Hahaha!

I checked it on Wikipedia: apparently it's a condition in some birds and reptiles where an egg gets stuck in the process of being laid.

ISTR that there was a Doctor Who novel that had Earth's magnetic reversal as a plot point.

*snerk* Nothing like a geeky ringtone to lighten the fact that someone really should've turned their phone off in class.

Sorry to hear about the bird. We lost our birds within months of each other, so I know how sad it is to lose them.

Thankfully we still have the other, and she's the one who did most of the burbling and being happy so it doesn't feel 'empty' - but once we lost three parakeets in the same year and had an empty cage and it was so strangely silent it was weird.

It is, especially when it wasn't anything that we could do anything about, but at the same time she wasn't really Miss Congeniality so we're almost more guilty about not grieving for her than being sad. :-P

I hope! I'm off to a huge women's convention in Portland - not my kind of thing for the most part, but I was talked into it by some friends so at least it will be a nice day with them no matter how over-sweetened the speakers might be. ;-)

... we, my one former roomie and I, bought a spatula for our other former roomie when she got married. We wrapped it up and put a tag on it: I LOVE YOU.
