I've grown accustomed to its face

My folks are visiting us for Christmas and as a part of her being here I managed to get my mom to set up a DWth account, as tulipsandquilts - a process that really opened my eyes to how complicated some of what I do all the time really is!

I've grown so accustomed to working with this particular bloggy-thing, whether in its LJ or DWth incarnation, that taking her step by step through things like the fact the blog needs a 'name' and what an icon is, how you add people and how you configure things and...and...yikes. No wonder non-computery people are sometimes intimidated by it.

When you think about it, this is really quite the futuristic, advanced life-form kind of thing to be doing. All that we need are some nice holodecks and photon torpedos and jet-packs now. Or at least one of those buttons like Mrs. Jetson had that smashed everything on the dinner table and swept it all into a hole - I want futuristic housecleaning to go with my futuristic communications now.

Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday! I love that you're taking your mom through the setting-up process (hello, if you are reading! :)) and yes, that's bound to be an eye-opener. It's pretty easy to take for granted that we are actually living in the future now, compared to the level of technology that existed when the internet became more publicly accessible. Really quite amazing.

I want futuristic housecleaning to go with my futuristic communications now.
Yesplease. UNF. (This coming after a morning spent cleaning all the kitchen and then again after dinner.)

Thank you! It was a good birthday, as they go - I have less and less interest in being reminded of my age the older I get but my aunt very logically reminded me "It's better than the alternative - you could be dead instead of just older!" - heh... My kids got me sushi and my hubby got me a shiny new camera that actually takes more than 4 pictures before going dead, unlike my old one, so all is good.

We are totally living in the future. All that communications stuff in Star Trek is crazy-real now, even the voice-recognition in the computers - now if we could figure out the 'beam me up' part.

Heh, I don't think my Mum is quite ready for blogging just yet but I have promised to teach her how to use google chat tomorrow so that she can ask for help with things when she sees that I'm online. The internet is still a huge mystery to her and she's always worried that she's doing something wrong or panicking about messages about updates to Windows/Word/her anti virus software. Most of this is just a confidence issue but some of it is definitely a jargon issue. I think we've yet to reach the stage where online things just work without you needing to know how or what to configure (Mum really needs something that works as well as a TV and TV remote and isn't any more complicated than that).

Mine is good with email and uploading pictures and such now, so she's plowing ahead into the world-o-blog conceptually well enough, it's all the little buttons and settings and jargon, as you say. Very confusing, often even for me if I wander off my beaten paths into the Land of Programmers for instance.

I would love a computer that works as easily as a TV and remote, that would be so cool. Macs were an effort in that direction and we reaped Windows from it, so at least we're on the right track.
