Slowly closing
Apr. 15th, 2005 02:30 pmI can't believe it has been over a month since I got a chapter up for Nothing of Note - such a struggle to close this tale. My dear old curmudgeonly Bilbo doesn't seem to want to ever stop, but I must pull on his reins or I'll never have time to write anything *else*... Thankfully, the next-to-last one is now up. This being the first time I've ever written anything so huge, have you other serial writers found this to be the way it goes, or do your characters quietly accede to their time being over? (for now) -
And Lin, you don't count - Boromir *lives in your house* for pity's sake...

I think when you spend so much time with one character, you actually start to think like them and it is hard to get away, and wrap things up. They do seem to take on actual substance, to the point that they determine when the story ends and not the writer! There are always more ideas, ways to lengthen the story and put off the inevitable end. And admit it, we get fond of these guys and don't want to see them go. So we are easily persuaded to do just one more chapter....
I'll just go over and see how Bilbo's doing. ;-)

Date: 2005-04-15 03:58 pm (UTC)Seriously, it is not always easy to end a long tale. You grow attached to your creations, they take on a life of their own, and often go places and do things you never intended. But it is oftentimes a relief to finally close the book and know you wrote the best tale that you could and made people who read it happy. If you are satisfied, then you have succeeded - and you most certainly have. ((( Prim)))
