Spent part of yesterday helping a friend get caught up on serious backlog in her laundry - she has been ill and ended up with almost everything she owned, plus linens, needing a wash which was overwhelming her. Rather than walking back and forth across the large apartment complex with an armload at a time for the pathetic washers they have there (cold water only and only a couple of them), we loaded up my station wagon (literally!) and headed to the local laundromat.

YIKES! How the heck to families without washers and dryers do this all the time? How can they afford to?? I brought forty bucks in quarters with me and it was *all gone* - and we weren't quite done! 8-0 It was 1.75 to 4.00 a washer, depending on the size, though the dryers were a bit more reasonable. At least there was hot water. What ever happened to 50 cents a wash? Am I really that old?

((((hugs own washer and dryer))))

I remember 50 cents a wash! I don't even want to know what it is now. I sure hope I don't have to resort to that again, with a move back to the Midwest into an unknown housing situation. And that doesn't even take into consideration the total pain of lugging things to and fro and the price of gas and the time just sitting there!!

*Lin promises herself that the new apartment must have access to washer and dryer... or else*

Gah! I remember that pain from college! Lugging load after load up and down flights of stairs. And the ones at college were not the industrial size washers like in the laundromats. They were little tiny ones that ate up our money. And the dryers were awful! Going through three cycles just to get the clothes semi-dry.

*shudders* *is thankful I finally live in an apartment that has a space for my own washer and dryer*

When my husband and I were apartment hunting, we were coming from an apartment with no laundry facilities. We looked at every apartment complex in the area we wanted to live in and when we came here they told us that a washer and dryer were standard in every apartment. SOLD!!! Never, never, never, never again will I schlep my laundry to the money pit! *happy sigh*

I gotta tell ya, just by your subject line I was expecting something a lot funnier!

I, too, have been appalled by the ridiculous prices laundromats think they can get away with. I do know some families would buy a washer then haul the wet clothes to the laundromat to dry. When I lived in Austin my roommate and I rented a washer/dryer pair and it was wonderful! Just this past Christmas I bought my very own washer and dryer...I couldn't be happier because of all the money I'm saving!
