Spent the day planting and dreaming of the future colors, lifting fluffs of chickweed, crumbling the brittle oak leaves that yet linger under the rosemary and among the strawberries. Pounding crumbly pink fertilizer spikes in around the fruit-trees while squinting up to find that mysterious place, the "drip line."

The cherry and plum are just beginning to bloom white and pink. The young roses lift up from the sea of waving daffodils and narcissus, unaware of the hollyhock seeds I have set nearby, summer playmates for their breezes and blooms. The old sleepy lilac seems barely aware of them, little whippersnappers, vibrant children around his feet. Oregon Grape lifts its head, embraces the firs, shadows the hyacinth and newly greening lilies. My cat scrubs herself on the rough stems of last year's peppermint, stalks the weeds I toss, runs straight up the apple tree in pursuit of an elusive squirrel. All the scents are heavenly, the ground is soft. It is spring.

This makes me wish I could have a garden. Living on the second floor of an apartment is not all it's cracked up to be! We do have a balcony, maybe I'll have to try the wee garden in a planter routine... In the meantime, I'll just come and read this beautifully peaceful piece and I'll feel like I'm in the garden. ;-)

It really is amazing some of the things they have out there for small spaces now, with so many folks in smaller homes or big homes with little yards. I was dreaming over a lovely self-watering planter with a lattice the other day, because you could fill it with a nice mushroom compost and planting soil and plop some cherry tomatoes in it and they would grow so well, all on the sunny deck, no threat of slug or weed around. There's little round terraced ones too, with a mister in the middle so you can make yourself a mound of fat strawberries... Hm... I may take over part of my deck too....
