We're spending this week over in Eastern Oregon, staying with my folks - the air is rich with the scent of baking vanilla whenever the wind blows, the ponderosas are so fragrant. Spent a day at a mountain lake boating and wading, had my youngest lose one of her sandals somewhere in the middle of the lake where in spite of all our dredging efforts we had to give it up for lost. She hopped back to the car with her remaining shoe and donned a cheap pair of flip-flops as a make-do. I was a little frustrated by it as they were nice sandals and nearly new, kids shoes cost so much.

Two days later we give in to the begging of the kids and return to the lake to putz the boat around a bit again. There on the bank lies her missing sandal!

Us: "Look! Look! Is that your sandal?"
Woman on the bank: "Oh no, it can't be hers. My son found that out in the middle of the lake."

Have you ever given up on something and had it return from the deeps?

This town gets taken over by a huge quilt show this weekend, they hang the entire town with quilts, even the gas station, the inside of the grocery store, everything. The place is already filling up with scads of women there for quilting classes and socializing, a holiday of sewing fanatics. Amazing. I can't sew to save my life, but nothing beats an entire town that's effectively one big women's pajama party.

This sounds like such fun! I'm glad the missing sandal was found...and the air smelling like Vanilla smells heavenly.

You may see some of my sister-in-law's quilts in that quilt show as she lives in Oregon and is a very accomplished quilter and enters lost of shows. Her name is Barb Smith.

I'll watch for her name - there are so many quilts it's almost overwhelming, but the quilty ladies are all such nice people. :-) Oh, and I'll see if I can get you some kitty photos when I get back home.

A friend of Tuilelindowen here... love your gardening posts but had to ask... was this in Sisters or Bend, ORegon? I used to live up south of Eugene and loved going up to Sisters and Bend! I'd live there except we knew no one personally there and it's so cold in the winter but it is stunningly gorgeous countryside!

Have you any pictures to share of the quilts or the lake?

Isn't that something about the sandal!

Bingo! I am in Sisters, and we were up at Scout lake. You are right, it is stunningly gorgeous here - everytime I go outside I am overwhelmed all over again. My folks live out on the edges of the town and look right across a huge nature preserve with a meadow to a view of the Three Sisters with their snowy peaks, I am surrounded with vanilla ponderosas and have pacific tree frogs jumping about in the grass, deer wandering the yard, hawks and mourning doves... The air is crystal clear, the wind is gentle and the trees all sigh around us. I go walking in the morning with wonderous silence and meadow grasses whispering around, quail skitter across the dusty pathway... I wish I could bring you here (and if it were my house, I probably would!) :-)

I admire quilters. Quilting can take so many forms and levels of complexity. It is a craft of artistry (got that) dexterity (not so much) patience (ummm) and focus (What was I talking about?)

It seems to be one of the spititual laws of the universe that you will never find what you are looking for until you give it up. That was a nice demonstration. Of course according to that law, Owasco Lake should have given up at least six pairs of St.Phillips family eyeglasses by now, lol.

Eastern Oregon sounds like a lovely place to be.
