I made yet another attempt at landing *any* of the other Pimpernel books at yet another bookstore, it is becoming a Quest unto itself to try to track him down. As usual, I get completely blank stares followed by "Really?" when I tell the salespeople/owners there are other titles in this series (yes, a series!) - in fact there are over a dozen. Stratus House publishes them. Where are they? I find it stunning that out of all of these well-read, bookish people I have yet to find even *one* who knew of anything but the "title" book's existance. Zounds!

Percy was right - he really is elusive. It looks as if I shall have to send across The Pond for him after all.

On the happy side, I now have my very own copy of the rather fun 1934 black-n-white movie version.

Alas, even Powells has let me down... they did have a couple of the other titles, but only as "rare" copies from the 40s and 50s, with mongo price tags on them, the others are "not available." :-/ The 'new' big Powells in Beaverton didn't even have a copy of the original title! (scandalous!) This baffled even the clerks.

The other weird thing was they had put him over with the "children's classics" like Wind in the Willows, according to their records. What are they thinking? Guillotines are children's reading nowdays? 0.o The French names alone would have boggled me as a child.

Loving your icon!

My first experiences with the dashing Pimpernel were with Leslie and Merle... and it took me until I was about 30 before I realized that HIS name was Leslie Howard and SHE was Merle Oberon! *snickers at self*

And I love yours! Ian's Chauvelin was the most perfect casting - he fits the description in the books so well he remains the image of Chauvelin in my imaginings for all of the tales, though my "literary" Percy and Marguerite are slightly different. Between my daughter and I we're amassing quite a collection of them, I'll have to rotate my faves being too much of a cheapskate to have a paid account.
