Dang. Really struggling here with Greek.

My kids new school is a marvelous thing, and we have really enjoyed doing this half-home-school routine, but the one thorn in the proverbial side is they have to have Greek. I understand the idea, that the kids would eventually be able to read the New Testament in the language in which it was originally written, a very noble cause - but shoot, it's in another *alphabet* for pity's sake... My kids now have Greek homework and I am completely helpless, I can't even understand what I am looking at much less what to do with it if they need aid. They are having a really difficult time with it too, the only point of real stress we've had raise its ugly head.

Grrr.

I miss Latin! At least it used the same alphabet and I could puzzle things out and help them.

Sigh...just venting.... mutter.

yea for Latin.

The Greek surprises me..After all, its not something you need in every day usage, and for the Bible they could always read the New American Standard Version, which as I understand is translated directly from the Greek.

Are they getting graded on this? If so, it seems alittle extreme to me to have Greek be a possible factor in bringing down their GPAs....not to mention having the time they spend on trying to figure it out take away from other subjects which will be important in college and in the real world...JMHO here.

Although I have to admit that when were back with Mom in the hospital, a call went out over the intercom paging for anyone who spoke Greek! They must have had a Greek patient or family member who didn't speak any English ;o!

And yea for Latin! I took it for three years in high school, and while I have mostly forgotten it, I recognize latin derivatives in English words now and then (including the "spells" in Harry Potter ;o!)

Greek? Cor blimey. One of the most intelligent people I know (an astrophysist I used to work with) was learning Greek to be able to read the Bible in the original. She's training to ber a vicar at the moment, but still found the Greek hard as modern Greek isn't the same as that used to write the New Testament (or Old Testament translations).

I prefer Latin myself ;-)

When I came for my interview here, my boss threw some greek at me to see if I was public school educated. I didn't have a clue.
Yay for Latin, which can actually be useful, unless you work in medicine of course.

Greek. That's a little intimidating to me, lol. Maybe you will pick up some things as your kids work with the language. That could be interesting!
