Just a brief political note for those in the States - Thanks to Stef for the pointer. Anyone interested in knowing exactly how many porky ornaments have been buried in the stimulus package may want to take a look over here where they've broken it down into an item-by-item list that can be voted on:

Be sure to let your reps and senators know what your own thoughts might be, pass the word.

What in the world is all that nonsense? I thought we were trying to jump start the economy and create jobs with this package. And yet I hear from ScienceDebate that they have cut nearly all of the proposed funding for scientific innovation that might actually do something helpful like creating jobs, retaining them in the US, encouraging young people to major in science and, oh I don't know, saving the future. But we have a smoking sessation program - admirable but hardly directly relevant to the situation. And apparently we are assisting non-ambulatory cattle. I am sure they will appreciate the assistance and I'd hate to imagine them unassisted, but is this really the time?

The seemingly random public works things at least make sense in terms of people actually working, and you know, getting paid, and eating and so forth, but come on! How do they sleep at night with some of this stuff.

It reminds me of the eternal bickering represented in "1776" where they shredded the Declaration of Independence and John Adams loses it at "Fishing rights!?"

Maybe we can feed all the non-ambulatory cattle to the starving hordes that will be not only unemployed but in withdrawls from nicotine...
