Do the Twist
Nov. 27th, 2004 03:53 pmAh, the quirks of homemade housing! We've just discovered that every single light fixture in the new house is wired exactly backwards. This means if someone were to say, stick a tool in to get a broken bulb end out or something they would get a very nasty shock - not to mention it being against code. Sigh. Lots of fixtures to have to take back down and rewire. Bleah. At least light fixtures is one thing I know how to do - I can twist wires together with those little wire nuts just like a pro. ;-)
Moved a large couch to make way for the carpet-cleaning guys - shouldn't have done that. Going to be quite stiff tomorrow I think - I need a super-muscles suit that I can zip into when this sort of thing comes up. I'm still shoving whatever I can fit into my station wagon and hauling it as much as I can by myself, so I really *could* too.
And lookee! I remembered to update my journal! Aren't you all proud of me? :-D

Date: 2004-11-28 12:07 pm (UTC)Mind you it is very satisfying to sort these problems out yourself. I see Pip is feeling great after giving her pad a spring clean and I spent yesterday mucking my place out and am feeling very smug having finally got the gollum picture I bought at Collectormania over a year ago finally properly wired up and on the wall together with the new John Howe and Alan Lee litho's. Still a lot to do but hard graft is good for the soul (if not muscle pain!)

Date: 2004-11-28 01:48 pm (UTC)Oh, you make me nostalgic for moving. I know that might sound wierd, but I actually LOVE moving. I love the chance to get into a "new" place and decorate and organize and well, I guess that's why every couple of months I HAVE to rearrange a room in my house. I just go crazy without some kind of change happening.
Doing it the way you're doing it is really smart too. You can deal with one car load of stuff at a time, much better than a whole moving truck full of stuff.
Oh how I wis I could come visit for a week to help you with all this. There's nothing better than chatting away the hours while you work side by side with someone at a task. Good luck with the switches, wear your rubber shoes!

Date: 2004-11-28 03:30 pm (UTC)I told Rose "It's such fun to have a new yard to play with! I have no idea what will come out of the ground in the Spring here." and she looked at me like I was crazy. She's not taking it so well, it being her first move (that she can remember - she was only 2 when we bought our other house).

Date: 2004-11-28 03:36 pm (UTC)I haven't gotten to the hanging pictures stage yet, but want to shop for a nice 'art light' to shine on my collection of works from Colleen Doran - that Glorfindel is still my favorite. I doubt she's had time to do much new stuff, but I'll check in with her in Pasadena just in case.

Date: 2004-11-28 05:36 pm (UTC)I took a night class once that was for basic home repairs - learned to patch a wall, to wire switches and lights, to set a toilet on a wax seal, etc. I remember most of it, or at least enough that I don't panic when I have to do those things. I've never regretted it! I was tired of feeling stupid about them, because I could see they weren't that complicated and it being 'male territory' when I had a procrastinating version of same wasn't working.
I want my own drill for Christmas, and a jigsaw. I must have the woodworking genes from my grandpa and uncles running around in me someplace, though I also know I don't have the time to use them. Sort of like wanting an art studio and stained glass tools too. I think we all need several lives just to pursue all the hobbies that interest us!
