(Oops, wrote in a hurry and got it wrong - I actually meant filhó - a traditional fried pastry - rather than bread. I'd have picked "kneading" otherwise. *bows head in shame*)
Well, it doesn't really fit into the bread category (Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filh%C3%B3s) describes it more as a type of donut) which is why I don't get my mix-up. :P It's usually a Christmas delicacy, but the village where my parents come from tend to eat it all year round.
As I keep trying to explain to people who say they prefer dogs, cats are the most loveable rewarding pets in the world...provided that you can accept that they are also selfish, evil, sadistic killers... ;D
I've always called that 'happy claws'. My Pippin does this frequently--whenever I have the comfy plush throw folded up on the divan. Zaphod does it less frequently, mostly when he gets belly-rubbin's.
You know, thinking about it I can only remember the briefest times I was ever catless - I've pretty much gone from cat to cat since I was born, I would miss having one around very much.
They're such brilliant animals. That's the one reason I can think of for getting your own place and staying there :)
(well, that and not having to go through the "search for a place, find a place that turns out inadequate half way through the contract, have to move, decide not to renew the contract cos the place is crap, search for a place...")
I've usually heard it called kneading, and it would be cuter without the claws. ;-) Once when my sister's cat did it with me, the claws made me yelp, and he stared up at me with big eyes like "What is this weirdo complaining about?" I almost wanted to apologize to his apparently-hurt dignity, oh dear.
I am ever so grateful that my cat is very good at remembering to use "butter-toes" when she's on our laps, she's very apologetic if she accidently forgets herself and scratches any of us.
I generally don't mind the claws (unless they try it on a bare leg or something... but they're usually smarter than that). It is adorable. ...unless they decide to stop and play the "put all of my weight on own paw" game. Ouchies!
I had a friend who raised and kept two litters of cats...he thought it was so adorable when they would get to his arms by climbing up his jeans when they were tiny, but oh boy did he pay for that when they were 13 big cats...! My (singular) cat, Pi, is very courteous, thankfully.
