Finally got my beautiful, wonderful daughter off to college - she's officially settled into her apartment and well content with her two roomies... nice little place, backs to a park while right there in the city. Watched lots of parents and a few students in varying states of separation anxiety on move-in day. My goal has always been to NOT be a "helicopter parent" that hovers over the offspring, I can only hope my attempts to launch her in a healthy way worked - caught me a bit off-guard how *hard* it was just to walk away from her that afternoon, like some huge alien magnet was taking over my feet and trying to drag me back.

Missing her like mad! Popped very briefly yesterday to drop off a needed bookcase and said I missed her...she said "But it's only been three days!" in disbelief... oh how different it is from this end! But I remember, yes I do. I barely looked back at my parents when I finally moved to college, I was so ready to fly on my own. I was so glad to have 'my own space'. I remember, and I understand, and we'll be fine - all of us.

Still. I miss her, her smile, her voice, her music - though I am so very glad and grateful for what she has going and for the years we got to have her in our home. One more new season to adjust to in life, we'll be better once the school routine starts up again and all of us are as busy as she is. Life goes on!

She's at Warner Pacific in Portland this year - close enough she can come home and do her laundry if she likes, which is a blessing.

AArrrrgh!
I have the same ordeal/relief at the end of the month with my youngest. He is off to Uni in the North East and will be at least 5 and a half hours away, so no popping home for him. He is so excited.

I and the cat shall miss him. Especially me as he makes me cups of tea on a regular basis all through the evening.

Sigh.

Now for his older brother.....

Hang in there, my dear - we'll make it, us parental folks, we'll make it... I really thought I was doing pretty well with it and being all mature and everything until I actually had to leave her - darn these life transitions. But hey, at least I'm not hanging around her place every day, lurking under the windows right? ha! All the best to you as you watch your son take wing and fly from the nest as well, I'm sure you've given him good strong wings.

having 4 girls, now at 25,29,30,33, I know that feeling well, and Prim my dear friend it never goes away, never.
You will make it. She will make it, and together you will be.
What is freaking me out is the fact that she is now old enough for college...another hair greyed, one fell, and I rejoice to lurk in the shadow and watch your family grow.

Peace, Love, & Happiness

Well, she did get to college rather quickly... she's going in as junior, thanks to the early college thing so don't feel *too* old. ;-) And yes, I have an inkling that I'll always miss her, in a more mellowed way. Helps me understand why my mom always wants to check on how myself and my brother are doing even though we've been away for years and years now.

Aw, good luck to you both. I've only done the leaving thing, (a scary number of years ago) but my Mum told me how she felt and nothing was right till she'd seen me again, when they visited halfway through the semester. But at least it's a good going, I suppose. :-/
