Pulled open the blinds in the dining room this morning and the first thing I saw was a flailing flying squirrel. Literally spread-eagled in mid-air with all four little paws waving around like a cartoon character.

Seems the movement at the window startled it right off the roof of the little squirrel bird-feeder it was looting for sunflower-seeds. X-D He landed and tried to regain what dignity he could by pretending that hadn't happened. *snert snert*

Squirrels are hilarious. My mom likes to tell me about a bird-feeder that was on top of a greased pole, about four feet high, and the squirrels would just keep trying to climb it and sliding back down, thump!

(Also - is that squirrel in your icon going around LJ as well, or are you on Ravelry?)

Seriously? Is there a place in the US *not* overrun with squirrels?

I love the little guys, even if they do keep burying nuts in my planters all the time.

I ran across an page somewhere talking about that now-famous ground squirrel that popped up in front of someone's auto-timed picture and it had samples of a variety of ways people had enjoyed photoshopping the squirrel into other scenes (the moonlanding was pretty good too). I was much amused by the Last Supper one so I cropped an icon from it. I expect he's all over the net by now!

I've enjoyed lurking on Ravelry a couple times to see creative projects but I barely qualify as a knitter (I only sort-of-crochet)so I've never joined in there.

They are awfully cute and amusing, which is why I don't really mind them getting the lion's share of the seed I put out. :-)

Mally and Freddy have decided that squirels are the new Dog TV. They've never encountered them before and they love to watch them through the glass door. And bark at them. And bark. And bark.

Last night, however, we had a possum pay our yard a visit. Freddy was so angry at the invasion, he nearly broke the door down trying to get out to chase it!

My mom's doxy about loses her mind every time she sees squirrels, going after them seems to be hardwired into dogs, I swear. :-D Possums are something else tho'! They can really hurt a dog if they get cornered, good job keeping your boys in.

Wasn't it? Straight out of the comics, except in real life.

Ah, it's such a sad, mushy brown yard in January - but the first bulbs are coming up now and the candytuft is already blooming again so maybe the next time the rain stops I'll do that. I need to get out there and finish trimming back the plum trees anyway. :-)

Thanks for the warning about possums. I didn't realize they could do damage... and I'm sure that Freddy, being the little Napoleon, wouldn't realize that either!

Yeah, right. *laughs* Leave it to English to be able to express a negative with two positive words! Crazy squirrel!

My family had a cat that would run through the great room into the kitchen (family room, dining room, and kitchen basically all flowed into each other) whenever he heard the sound of the electronic can opener, thinking, of course, that it was something for him. I caught him out once where he had realized that, no, it wasn't cat food or T-U-N-A, but just some people food (probably veggies for the pot--nothing that a cat would be interested in, of course!). He developed a sudden need to sat and wash a hind leg, but that didn't fool me. Ha! I pointed and laughed at him so much, that obviously I impeded his dignity. He removed to the formal living room, where he was not supposed to go because of the sheers, and hid under the sofa for quite some time afterwards. I still laugh when I remember that. :)

Thanks for the picture in my mind of your dog barking at the possum. It reminded me of my big boy cat who would literally throw himself against a sliding glass door to get at the cats outside.

When we were little kids we were once confronted by a possum in a yard full of very tall grass. We thought that a cat was in this disused yard, and were very alarmed to see a possum appear (the only ones that we were familiar with were the ones by the side of the road). It hissed at us, and being little kids, we ran shrieking back to our grandparents' house. :)

ETA: The bird icon is, of course, to excite the cats and dogs. :)
